At the Budget on 26th November, the Government is expected to decide how minicab journeys are taxed. They are considering adding 20% VAT to passenger fares – a fivefold tax hike.
The ‘Taxi Tax’ would be a new consumer tax, hitting those who can least afford it the hardest, including vulnerable people who depend on taxi and minicab services for essential travel.
The British public is firmly against the Taxi Tax. Seven in ten people say it represents a new tax on working people, a clear breach of Labour’s manifesto commitment not to increase VAT.
Fares would rise dramatically to cover the cost of the VAT increase, leaving passengers facing higher prices and fewer transport options. As fewer people could afford to travel, drivers’ livelihoods would be put at risk.
Without urgent action, the impact across the country will be severe.
